  1. Thank you for the presentation last night.

There are a couple of wonderful digital education providers in and around Christchurch that I would like Fendalton School to develop strong partnerships with. The first is eTime www.etime.co.nz their programmes for 7 year olds + are fantastic. The second is Alpha Education www.alphaed.org.nz which is NZ's first digital classroom. Frances Hill is the founder and she is based in Fairlie, South Canterbury. Frances would like to develop a strong partnership with a Christchurch school and this would be a great opportunity for the students and staff to be part of something very new. I believe what Frances is offering is outstanding and probably 10 - 15 yrs ahead of it's time. Frances would welcome the opportunity to come and present in Christchurch, I am happy to co-ordinate something. Fendalton School needs to be part of the global classroom.

Whilst thinking about technology I think that all children at Fendalton School should learn to touch type. I have purchased a home licence from the UK for Touch, Type, Read, Spell it is a wonderful programme and I believe it could easily be integrated into the daily classroom programme at all levels of the school. My child is 6, he has fine motor skills issues and needs to be keyboard savy.

On another subject I would like to see Fendalton School stop 5 year olds entering school on the day of their 5th birthday. NZ is about the only country in the world who still do this. It is terribly disrupting for teachers and children. A much better system would be one intake on the first day of each term. Be the first school to make the stand, others will follow.

Please contact me if you would like more information about Alpha, I have been exploring this for a while and have visited the online classroom.

  2. Thanks Kate for your ideas,

Here is a free online typing tool which might be of interest to children and parents alike:

    www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php

I'm sure there are others which people may know about.

  3. Thank you Paul,

A facinating clip, thank you for sharing this and its thought provoking content.

This reiterates the need for me as an educator to keep on investing time in providing learning experiences that educate children on:
    - how to be selective with information (so much and so easily accessed).
    - to recognise the values of different ICT medium use to reach an audience.
    - to have the thinking tools to be equiped to work and live and lead in an increasingly complex and diverse world beyond our imagination.
